My Holistic Counselling Thesis
(That Became My Point of View)
One of the requirements for the Holistic Counselling Certification was developing a thesis around healing, one's journey, or related topics. For me, I was guided to explore my personal transformation in a context that mattered deeply: aligning holistic counseling practices with the teachings of the Qur'an.
I grew up in a semi-conservative Sunni Muslim family. Over time, the community around me shifted toward a stricter, Wahhabi-influenced patriarchy. Those years layered on dogma, rigid expectations, and a narrow view of spirituality that compressed my inner life. Unlearning that conditioning took time — and it was painful. I navigated feelings of shame, confusion, grief over opportunities missed or choices judged, and the loss of relationships that couldn’t hold the complexity I was becoming. With every question my elders could not answer, I lost an authority figure.
My healing journey involved three intertwined movements:
Exploring Faith and Self: Instead of abandoning faith or holding it as an unexamined authority, I began engaging with the Qur'an as a teacher of compassion, justice, and inner transformation. I sought interpretations that honored dignity, agency, and the sacredness of each person’s path.
Integrating Holistic Practices: I explored counseling methods — mindfulness, bioenergetic practices, introspective journaling, inner work, and compassionate inquiry — and examined how each aligns within an Islamic ethical framework. My aim wasn't synthesis for its own sake, but to offer practices that support spiritual growth free of religious dogma, while still honoring religious values and the diversity of each person's lived reality.
Reclaiming Authority: I learned to separate divine guidance from human interpretation. That meant questioning inherited rules, recognizing where power and patriarchy had been projected onto religion, and cultivating the courage to make decisions aligned with my heart and intellect.
The thesis question “what Quranic teachings can be used to bring the benefits of the holistic healing course to the Muslim client?” was explored in parallel to my personal healing journey as well as the conversations I have had over the past years with my clients and friends. Seven themes emerged from the observations. They are as follows, in no particular order: the creation of the witness, connecting with the body, recognizing and embracing the personal story, understanding choice, purification, the relationship with the spiritual world, and forgiveness and compassion.
What emerged from the work was a model for practitioners who want to support Muslim clients (or those from similar religious contexts) without erasing faith.
It centers:
Respect for religious language and practices (*).
Tools to help clients reclaim spiritual authority: discerning what teachings empower them versus what beliefs constrain them.
Practical integrations of bioenergetic exploration, consciousness work, and mental reframes that align with clients’ values and spiritual commitments.
This path has shaped my healing, and informed the counseling I offer.
Each person’s healing journey is unique to them. Regardless of what they encounter on that journey and beyond, they need to have tools that empower them to look within themselves and heal with the confidence that they are not breaching their own spirituality rooted in Islam.

*A Personal Note on Religious Trauma:
I am aware of how religion itself, the way it is interpreted, and the way it is taught and practiced can be the source of a wound, and a cause for needing healing (Read more about Religious Trauma Syndrome in Wikipedia).
As a woman, it was a jarring experience to discover that the religious belief system I grew up trusting to guide my life, decisions, and spiritual growth was misogynist and tribal at best, and misleading at worst. In either case, it kept me small, feeling small regardless of any achievement or milestone I had reached.
It took me years to decontaminate my mind and spirit from the teachings I received.
My awakening had to start somewhere!
It took years to redefine my relationship to myself and to others. It took years to rebuild my connection to my family - and work through the grief of losing the connection to those who did not want to understand my metamorphosis.
And it took more years to build a new foundation based on what I hold to be the highest value that can lead my path. It was tempting to throw the baby with the bath water, my intention was and has always been that I am seeking TRUTH - AL-ḤAQQ. That intention informed my exploration, the shifts I made and continue to make, and the path that revealed itself to me. I went through a phase of disconnect from all religious practices, and found my way back to them. I now practice - and teach my children to practice - with intention, gratitude and delight.
