Twelve Things You Need to Know About Outer Authority
““Outer authority is an expression of mind when the mind is free … from the mundane, free from being a false inner authority.
Only then your mind gets to emerge, and what emerges is unique, it is YOU.””
Note: This article and its key ideas are based on the Human Design (HD) System, if you are not familiar with the System, that is alright. I discuss the mind from the point of view of HD. You may want to read more about Human Design here: What is Human Design?.
Decision-making is more critical today than it's ever been before.
With the world changing at an unprecedented pace before our very eyes, individuals are continually looking for ways to make decisions about different aspects of their lives. They seek the authority of conventional wisdom of generations, modern-day gurus to tell them what to do or what to believe, and coaches to teach them how to act. Often the different pieces of advice from this or that source conflict with each other. And more often than not, what works for one person beautifully, is useless for another, adding to the confusion we witness around us.
Decision-making is born out of authority, particularly authority over one’s own life. Though you may be an expert on everything, but you cannot be an expert on someone’s life, and definitely not an authority making their decisions for them - under normal circumstances.
While you have your own inner authority, your mind can be an amazing resource for others, a reference or a guide or an expert.
You can only be an outer authority for others. And the two, inner authority and outer authority, are different, and equally important.
“au•thor•i•ty (əˈθɔr ɪ ti, əˈθɒr-)
n., pl. -ties.
1. the power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle issues; the right to control, command, or determine.
2. a power or right delegated or given; authorization.”
So when you seek ways to grow and retrain your decision-making muscle, you need to understand a few things about having an Authority in general and Outer Authority in particular:
There are two types of authority. An Inner Authority for decision-making, and an Outer Authority NOT for decision-making.
Inner Authority is a place within your body that you connect with to make personal decisions about your life. (More about this later).
An Outer Authority is your mind minus its baggage (conditioning), aka your free mind. Though very popular for decision-making, your mind is not meant to call the shots in your life, or in the lives of others.
According to the revelation that birthed Human Design in the world, 1781 was a turning point for humanity. For millennia, humanity has survived thanks to the power of mind, but we have outgrown it as a decision-making tool. Humans have mutated from being seven-centered to nine-centered beings. The task now is to differentiate and individuate using a unique inner authority. According to Ra, we have completed our mental trip, and we are now on a path of evolving the spirit.
As free-minded nine-centered beings, we are here to commune with one another, and to offer each other unique perspectives on life and living.
This perspective is born out of living correctly as oneself, the potential every person can achieve by following one's Type, Strategy, and Inner Authority.
Consequently, one becomes of extraordinary service to the other, a source of knowledge when it is correct and in alignment with one's inner authority.
Outer Authority is the capacity to offer one's authentic outlook based on one's unique design (illustrated by the body graph), unsullied by the mind's blocks, Defenses, and dysfunctional beliefs (the mental baggage).
“communion (kəˈmjuːnjən) n.
1. an exchange of thoughts, emotions, etc
2. possession or sharing in common; participation
3. (followed by with) strong emotional or spiritual feelings (for): communion with nature.”
IA.T.A.T.C.OIn the Body Graph, Outer Authority is the Head and Ajna Centers (Mind). Biologically, those centers are the pituitary gland and anterior and posterior glands in the brain.
The opposite of a free Outer Authority is the Not-Self mind; a group of unhealthy patterns of Behaviors which are called “conditioning”, also known as “programming”, “upbringing”, “beliefs”, etc.
Conditioning takes root everywhere in you. It creates rigidity in one’s openness and distortion in their definition. The Not-Self mind takes away one's potential for unique cognition, corrupts the personality motivation, and causes the loss of one’s unique direction in life, thus missing out on the privilege of living an exceptional existence.
The Not-Self mind is a defended entity that does not want to be challenged. It carries rigid personal images that are unnegotiable and untouchable. At the same time. it wears a mask to ensure getting others approval - real or imagined.
The path to a unique and free Outer Authority and correct living is simple - not easy. You have a vehicle (a body) that you need to treat according to its mechanical nature (Type, Strategy and Authority). Then you'll have a chance to experience the changes and transformations and live your life signature (peace, satisfaction, success, or surprise).
Experimenting with Human Design, you untether your mind from the Not-Self and its patterns and defenses, and something new emerges; you begin a process of awakening - bringing healing to you, and awakens your passenger to a state of aware witnessing, paving the way to thriving as a human being and growing in the different areas of your life.

“When you surrender at the mental level, you begin your journey. This is a journey, a journey of awareness. It is what we are here for. Everything else is just stimulation, what I call entertainment, entertainment to stimulate awareness. It’s the experience of being, the experience of existence, and it doesn’t have to be a horror.
The beauty of finally having the right frequency, being tuned is that you begin to be in harmony with the world around you. You begin to see through the veil that this is not just simply a place of horror and ugliness. But there’s great beauty on this plane.
There are great things here for us to experience in this life, aware, the bonds that are there for us, love, friendship, all of these things, but aware.”
