The Myth of Will Power
How many times have you heard the adage: "you need willpower to achieve what you want"?
How many times have you achieved your goals using your willpower?
And how long was it before YOU JUST GAVE UP and found yourself in a worse place than that you started from?
Listen, I'm all for using will power. But you need to understand something about it: will power is a very finite reserve that you can only use as many times as you can wear your very expensive pair of shoes, which is on special occasions.
For example, you may have fallen into the trap of using (and using up) your will power exercising really hard, only to find yourself grabbing the first banana muffin upon returning home, and maybe giving up on your weight-loss goal (been there, done that).
So how do you approach your goals if you are not relying on your reserve of will power?
The smart thing to do is to know your self, and to uncover your patterns. Then you can work with yourself, and overcome your patterns, which does not require will power, but self-awareness.
The more you know yourself, the less likely you will fall into the traps set by your negative patterns. A pattern, as defined by Dictionary.com, is: "a recurrent way of acting by an individual or group toward a given object or in a given situation". Once you see the pattern, you conquer it.
You can hack your patterns (whether related to weight loss, relationship, behavior) by keeping a daily journal, over a period of time, preferably forever. This one addition to your daily routine either in the morning or before going to bed, can help you uncover thought patterns that create resistance, sabotaging your goals.
Using willpower while having inner resistance is similar to driving a car with one foot on the gas pedal and the other on the breaks simultaneously!
Over time, you will start applying self-awareness in place of personal willpower, and you will remove inner resistance; when you can do that, then you will be able to introduce changes in a seamless and swift manner into your life, and save your will power reserve for use when necessary and required.
